DESCRIPTION



· The TL16C550C and TL16C550CI are upgraded versions of the TL16C550B asynchronous communications element (ACE), which itself is an upgrade of the TL16C450. They are functionally equivalent to the TL16C450 on power up and can be placed in an alternate FIFO mode to reduce CPU software overhead by buffering characters. The FIFOs can store up to 16 bytes, with additional error status bits for the receiver FIFO. The device includes autoflow control features to manage serial data flow using RTS and CTS signals, enhancing system efficiency. It performs serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversions, supports modem control, and includes a programmable baud rate generator. The ACE accommodates a 1-Mbaud serial rate with a 16-MHz input clock, providing a bit time of 1 μs and a typical character time of 10 μs. The TL16C550C and TL16C550CI also feature TXRDY and RXRDY signals for DMA controller communication.
