What Is a Distance Sensor?


At their core, distance sensors are transducers, meaning they convert one form of energy into another. They operate by sending out a signal toward a target object and then detecting how the reflected signal changes upon its return.

Unlike traditional distance measurement tools, such as measuring tapes or calipers, distance sensors do not make physical contact with the object being measured.

Measurements can be taken by assessing the time it takes for the reflected signal to return, the intensity of the reflected signal, or the phase shift of the signal after reflection.


Distance Sensor Applications


Distance measurement applications vary widely depending on the specific capabilities of each sensor.

For instance, ultrasonic distance sensors are well-suited for smart cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, and robotics that do not demand a high level of precision.

In contrast, infrared sensors are commonly employed in TVs, computers, security systems, and various monitoring and control applications.

Laser distance sensors, on the other hand, are ideal for situations requiring exceptional precision, such as in machining and engineering, as well as in manufacturing and construction industries.
