Introduction of Zenner diode

A Zener diode is specifically designed to operate in reverse breakdown mode, and its characteristics are defined by this functionality. These diodes serve as voltage references or for voltage limiting and can also act like rectifier diodes, allowing current to flow in one direction. However, their performance in this role is typically not as optimal as that of dedicated rectifier devices. Each product in this category features a single instance of this function within its package.

Zener diodes are a special type of device designed to operate in the Zener breakdown region. A Zener diode acts in the same way as a normal PN junction diode under forward bias conditions. When a forward bias voltage is applied to a Zener diode, it allows a large amount of current to pass while preventing only a small amount of current from passing.

Zener diodes are more heavily doped than normal PN junction diodes. As a result, the depletion region of a Zener diode is very thin. Therefore, a Zener diode allows more current to flow than a normal PN junction diode.
