The HEF4541BT,51 is a programmable timer that includes a 16-stage binary counter, an integrated oscillator for use with external timing components, automatic power-on reset, and output control logic. The external components RTC and CTC determine the oscillator frequency within the range of 1Hz to 100kHz. An external clock signal at input RS can replace the oscillator, and the timer advances on the positive-going transition of RS.

Functional Description

The HEF4541BT,51 features an oscillator that can be used with external timing components to determine the frequency. The device also supports an external clock signal at the RS input. The timer advances on the positive-going transition of the RS input. The internal power-on reset is enabled by a LOW on both the auto reset input (AR) and the master reset input (MR). A HIGH level on the MR input resets the counter independent of all other inputs, disabling the oscillator to provide no active power dissipation.

The 16-stage counter divides the oscillator frequency by 28, 210, 213, or 216 depending on the state of the address inputs (A0, A1). The divided oscillator frequency is available at output O. The phase input (PH) features a complementary output signal. When the mode select input (MODE) is LOW, the timer operates as a single transition timer, and when HIGH, it operates as a 2n frequency divider.

RC Oscillator Timing Component Limitations

  • Oscillator Frequency: Determined by RTC and CTC.
  • Recommended Values:CTC: ≥100pF, up to any typical value.RTC: 10kΩ ≤ RTC ≤ 1MΩ.
  • Stray Capacitance (C2): Keep as small as possible.
  • Accuracy Considerations: CTC must be larger than inherent stray capacitance. RTC must be larger than the CMOS 'ON' resistance in series with it (typically 500Ω at VDD = 5V, 300Ω at VDD = 10V, and 200Ω at VDD = 15V).
